CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

As she drove aimlessly, avoiding her destination for now, her phone chimed. She pulled up the text at the next light.

I found out where Statler works. Meet me back at the diner, and we’ll go together.

Adam. She’d forgotten about him. She didn’t really want to get him any more involved with this. But he’d given her the company name… It only took a moment to find the address and phone number. A quick call, and she was on her way.

She pulled into a parking lot that spanned almost a city block, crammed with pickup trucks, most with the company logo. The business, a civil engineering firm, clearly employed a lot of people in this small town. As she made her way toward the sprawling, one-level building, the front entryway door opened, and a guy stepped out, surveyed the parking lot, and spotted her. He waved her to stay where she was, but she plowed ahead anyway.

“I told you I’d meet you in the parking lot, didn’t I?” He stood in front of her with both thumbs hooked through loops on his jeans, his brow furrowed. Brandon Statler hadn’t aged quite as well as Mr. Chase, but close. He still showed signs of the chiseled jawline and still sported the thick hair he'd once worn as a mullet, now updated to a classic trim. He presented the typical imagery of a construction worker, his lip bulging with tobacco, and he took this opportunity to spit. Thankfully, not on her shoes.

He was large, muscled, either from the activity of his job or from weightlifting, the kind done by guys who sought to be intimidating rather than healthy. The resulting testosterone overload presented an image that probably attracted many women but never her.

“Thanks for meeting with me, Brandon, and I’m sorry about interrupting your workday.” She did her best to turn on a bit of charm with her smile, but he seemed unimpressed. “How about we sit in my car for a couple of minutes?”

He nodded unhappily and followed her, folding himself uncomfortably into her passenger seat. Once they settled in, he asked, “What is this all about? I heard you’re an attorney now. Good for you. I don’t have much time, so let’s get on with it.” Even as he said it, his eyes traveled over her body in a way that made her want to shove him out of the car.

She ignored the urge. “Of course. I’m here looking into the death of our classmate, Hayley Strickland. I’m sure you remember her, right?”

“She was the chick in all the school plays, one of those too cute, too nice, girls everyone loved.” He said it with a trace of contempt, as though Hayley’s popularity, looks, and personality were something to mock. Interesting. He seemed to bear some sort of grudge against Hayley, even after all these years.

“There’s another reason you might remember her, and it was a party we all attended a couple of weeks before Hayley… died.” She couldn’t utter the words ‘killed herself.
